Managing Dental Emergencies

May 1, 2020

Emergency Dental Care

Although dental emergencies are varied and different, there are many steps you can take to take temporary measures while waiting for urgent dental care. Read on to find out how to go about managing dental emergencies while getting urgent dental care.

Managing a Toothache

Managing Dental Emergencies can vary greatly, from the ordinary to the surprising. One common dental emergency is a toothache.
There are simple ways to treat a toothache at home, but if it persists for longer than a day or two, it is important to consult with your dentist, as the cause for the toothache could be a small irritation, or a symptom of a larger problem. If you are dealing with discomfort due to a toothache, you can keep it clean and well cared for by appropriate oral hygiene, salt water rinses, and analgesic gels, or clove oil in a carrier oil, such as almond oil, applied with a cotton ball.

Managing a Lost Filling

If you or someone in your family loses a filling, or a crown, you can use dental wax to cover any sharp exposed edges, or a temporary filling material to keep your tooth from further decay and exposure to bacteria in your mouth. Consult with your dentist to see what they recommend regarding a lost filling or crown, and whether or not that is an urgent care matter, or something you can temporarily hold over at home.

Managing a Hurt or Injured Mouth

If you suspect a tooth fracture or a tooth has been knocked out, consult with your dentist immediately to determine next steps. Managing dental emergencies can often mean making good use of the professionals who can help. Please call immediately for any kind of traumatic dental injury.

Managing a Cavity or Abscess

If you think you suffer from a cavity, do call your dental office to determine how to care for it until they can see you. If you suspect an abscess, let your dentist know.

The ability to consult via telemedicine, video chats, and other means through technology means you are not alone in managing dental emergencies. Although we are all adapting to these strange circumstances during this pandemic, we are in this together and you are not alone.

If you need to consult with a dentist during this time about your current dental care needs, call our Edinburg Dental Office to talk with a dentist who may be able to help you find out more about this topic, and improve your oral health.

My husband and I visited Palm Valley Dental and Orthodontics and it was a rewarding experience. Dr. Torres and Dr. Trevino are so patient, knowledgeable and professional. Caleb, the Dental Hygienist is also very thorough and courteous. The office staff are so pleasant and helpful as well.

Literally, the first time ever at dentist, went in terrified, left informed on my dental care/plan, and scheduled my return visit for the in depth cleaning. Overall, great experience, staff & doctor were attentive, professional and very receptive to all my questions and even the nervousness I displayed.

After experiencing a few negative experiences at a previous dental practice, I cautiously decided to try this new dental place. I had a wonderful first visit here and felt a great relief after my appointment. Everyone I encountered was so kind and friendly, and all my concerns and questions were addressed. I highly recommend. 😊
