Is Your Child Brushing Right? 5 Mistakes Parents Don’t Realize

April 1, 2025

Dental Health

As parents, we work hard to keep our kids healthy, including their teeth. But even with the best intentions, many parents miss the mark when helping their children brush properly. Brushing mistakes can lead to cavities, gum issues, and a trip to the dentist sooner than you’d like.

Here are five common brushing mistakes parents don’t always realize—and how to fix them.

1. Letting Kids Brush Alone Too Early

Kids love independence, but brushing solo too soon often leads to missed spots. Most children don’t have the motor skills to brush effectively until around age 7 or 8. Until then, supervise and help with brushing. Let them practice first, then follow up to ensure they reach every area, especially the back molars.

2. Rushing the Two-Minute Rule

Two minutes might feel like forever to a child. Still, dentists recommend brushing for a full two minutes to ensure plaque removal. Try using a fun timer, a musical toothbrush, or an app that encourages kids to brush at the right time. Turning brushing into a game keeps it from feeling like a chore.

3. Skipping Dental Checkups

Even if your child brushes well, regular dental checkups are essential. A pediatric dentist can catch early signs of tooth decay, monitor development, and provide guidance on brushing techniques. Routine visits build good dental habits and reduce anxiety around the dentist.

4. Using the Wrong Toothbrush or Toothpaste

Some kids use brushes that are too big or have stiff bristles, which can hurt their gums or miss small spaces. Choose a soft-bristled brush sized for their age. Fluoride toothpaste helps protect enamel, but always use a pea-sized amount and teach your child to spit it out, especially if they’re under 6.

5. Missing the Gums and Tongue

Brushing isn’t just about the teeth. Bacteria also collect along the gumline and on the tongue. Teach your child to brush along the gums gently and to clean their tongue as part of their routine. This helps reduce bad breath and keeps their whole mouth healthier.

Teach Good Habits Early

When it comes to oral health, prevention starts at home. Teaching your child to brush correctly from a young age sets them up for a lifetime of healthy smiles. Use fun tools, reward charts, and praise to keep brushing positively.

Literally, the first time ever at dentist, went in terrified, left informed on my dental care/plan, and scheduled my return visit for the in depth cleaning. Overall, great experience, staff & doctor were attentive, professional and very receptive to all my questions and even the nervousness I displayed.
