Is Seltzer Safer than Soda?

May 2, 2022

Dental Care

You have probably heard before that soda can be hard on your teeth, but is seltzer safer than soda? Or can they both be harmful to your smile? Read on to learn about how soda and seltzer affect your teeth so you can keep your smile healthy and bright.

Why is Soda Bad?

The main reason why soda can be hard on your teeth is because it often contains high amounts of sugar. Sugar is a leading cause of cavities because sugar feeds the naturally occurring bacteria in your mouth, which in turn produces acid. The resulting acidic environment can erode the enamel (or outer layer) of your teeth, leading to cavities or small holes in your teeth.

Is sugar-free seltzer safer than soda then? Sugar-free sodas and seltzers aren’t as harmful to your teeth as sugary sodas, but they can still have a negative impact because they are acidic, which also can contribute to a more acidic environment in your mouth.

Healthy Hydration

One of the main reasons people run into problems with seltzer is when it is used as a source of hydration. Sodas and seltzers aren’t made to be used in place of water as a way to stay hydrated, rather they are designed to be consumed as a special treat on special occasions. Your main source of hydration should always come from pure water.

Minimizing the Effects

When you do drink seltzer, or soda, it can be helpful to minimize the risks by enjoying it in moderation. It can also be helpful to use a straw to reduce the amount of acid or sugar that comes in contact with your teeth. And always make sure to brush your teeth well afterwards with a fluoride-containing toothpaste to keep your teeth clean, as well as to help remineralize and strengthen them.

My husband and I visited Palm Valley Dental, and it was a rewarding experience. Dr. Torres and Dr. Trevino are so patient, knowledgeable and professional. Caleb, the Dental Hygienist is also very thorough and courteous. The office staff are so pleasant and helpful as well.

Literally, the first time ever at dentist, went in terrified, left informed on my dental care/plan, and scheduled my return visit for the in depth cleaning. Overall, great experience, staff & doctor were attentive, professional and very receptive to all my questions and even the nervousness I displayed.
